Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution (16th - 18th century) was when trains, machines, factories and many other things were invented. In turn, this revolutionised the way things were produced and run. Unfortunately, work ethics and health & safety were not top priority. Children worked in factories rather than going to school as they were small enough to fit into machinery. Many workers died or suffered serious injuries from these new machines.
If I were to choose this theme for my assignment I would concentrate on the inventions and possible new weaponry that could be invented. Characters would be dirty, miserable and wearing a lot of black clothes. Working on children's designs would be interesting. If I were to take inspiration from a game that has elements of the Industrial Revolution, I would use Bowerstone Industrial estate from Fable 2 and the character designs from Bloodbourne.
I was originally thinking of merging this time period with the 3000AD theme for a Steampunk style. Futuristic weaponry and inventions, even robots, in a Victorian style setting. Steampunk has become increasingly popular but is rarely seen in video games.
I decided against this theme, or merging the two as although I was very inspired by the Steampunk style I don't think it gave enough room for creativity. Steampunk seems to fit better with a Wild West setting and is generally more American than European.
